Pilots is an electronic group, more specifically IDM (intelligent dance music)/downtempo, out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The band consists of Andrew Wright and John McCoy.

Andrew and his family moved to Wisconsin while he was in the second grade. His family has a diverse musical background that spans generations. Singing and playing instruments are a way of life for them. In high school, Andrew learned to play the tuba, and he has been playing it ever since (though he is yet to introduce it into Pilots' repertoire).

John was raised in Louisiana. When he was ten years old, he learned how to play the piano. Eventually, John made the decision to move away from Louisiana. He had the choice of moving to Florida or Wisconsin. John resolved upon Wisconsin partially due to its diverse musical culture.

After the move, a mutual friend introduced John to Andrew. The two shared a lot in common and began hanging out together. However, it would be a few years before either one of them knew that the other played music.

One night, at two o'clock in the morning, the two were in Andrew's living room. Andrew and John began playing with glasses that contained various levels of water. The two sampled the sound that glasses made, and in turn, made an entire song out of those samples.

From that point, on, Andrew and John started making music together any chance that they could sneak it into their busy, and sometimes opposite, schedules.

Andrew refers to Pilots' sound as "somewhat guitar driven." The two list some of their influences as Meat Beat Manifesto, Mouse on Mars, and Daft Punk. While they have similar tastes in music, their preferences are not congruent. Their style relies heavily upon musical experimentation and improvisation, however, they do their best to work within their strict musical foundations and improv over the top those guidelines. They pride themselves on a "well-developed" sound and they include the use of chord progressions in their songs. Pilots wants people to walk away feeling as though what they just heard was well thought out.

At times, John and Andrew will pick up their guitars and not touch any other instruments for months on end, and after that they will turn around and not use a guitar for a long while. Other times, John will manipulate various sound-making items in order to create a new sound. John even mentioned tweaking a Speak & Spell and a Speak & Math to create new Pilots sounds. In fact, in Andrew Wright's Bayview home, you'll find two rooms filled with gadgets, trinkets, and equipment that make sounds. Not just instruments, all sorts of sound-making equipment.

While instruments and other sound making devices are integral in Pilots' sound, 65% of their music is software based. The band uses many different types of software, foot pedals, and other audio-manipulating hardware to create their unique sound.

At the moment, most of Pilots' music can only be heard on the web. The group relies heavily on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/musicofpilots) and SoundCloud (SoundCloud.com/PilotsTheBand) to distribute their songs.

On December 4th, 2009, Pilots will be playing their first live show at the Mitchell Domes on South 27th Street in Milwaukee. The group has been working to overcome the challenges of taking an electronic show live on the road without sounding like a regular club deejay. They are now prepared to take on that challenge and look forward to any opportunity that comes their way. Pilots is also considering releasing an EP or an LP in the future.

As for the name, Pilots, it was a brainchild of John's. One day, after months of struggling to come up with a name for their band, John text-messaged the word "Pilots" to Andrew (a licensed pilot). John and Andrew have been known as Pilots ever since.

Artist Profile - Dustin Lee

Name: Dustin Lee
Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Hometown: Fort Madison, IA
Current City: Milwaukee, WI

Dustin Lee is a singer/songwriter from Iowa who now lives in Milwaukee. His music has been called Americana, and sometimes Alt. Country. He describes himself as laid back, and his style as "subtle."

Dustin was born in Missouri and raised in the railroad town of Fort Madison, Iowa. His mom stayed at home while his dad worked on the rail lines. Dustin says that his love of music came from his uncles - one who was a phenomenal guitarist, and the other simply into music.

As a child, Dustin was an award-winning vocalist. He was selected for the Iowa Opus Honor Choir three years in a row, the Iowa All-State Choir three years in a row, and in his senior year of high school, Dustin was the fourth-ranked bass-2 in the state.

Though his main focus was choir, Dustin began playing the guitar at age eight with his best friend, Shaun. The first year they both played acoustics, and a year later they both started playing electrics. Dustin received his first electric guitar as a Christmas present when he was nine years old.

When Dustin went off to college at Western Illinois University, he and some friends formed a rock band named, "Doubt." Although the band was playing during the "Nirvana Era" of the nineties, Doubt had a more of an R.E.M. influence. The band relied more on melodies and phrasing rather than the harder grunge style that was popular at the time.

After college, Dustin moved back to Iowa. An opportunity arose when the lead singer of a popular regional rock band named, "Head First," quit the band. Dustin was hired to fill in while they searched for a permanent replacement. He began singing and writing music for the band which would eventually become even more popular. Head First played shows in Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, to crowds of 500 to 1,000 or more each night. However, after six years, the band decided to split up.

He played with a new band, similar to Doubt, for a few years, until his wife, Emily, was hired by a Quincy, Illinois television station. The couple moved to Quincy, and Dustin began to focus his music more on his life. He learned to play the harmonica, and started writing songs that he could perform by himself - just him, his harmonica, and his guitar. The songs he wrote were inspired by his experiences and his life growing up.

After a few years in Quincy, Emily was hired to be a news anchor at CBS 58 in Milwaukee. The couple moved to the city. After his arrival in Wisconsin, Dustin recorded an eight-song acoustic album. He also started playing open mics around the city and networking with new people. He met the owner of RockIt Records & Recording and was hired to put together an album. "On My Way Back Home," was Dustin's first album recorded with an entire band. The album features 13 songs and is available now on iTunes and Amazon.com.

Dustin plays shows throughout Wisconsin and he returns to play in Iowa every so often, as well. He was recently hired by Gap Inc., to play during their 40th Anniversary in-store show. Eight hundred Gap stores, nationwide, hired local musicians to perform for two hours in their stores, and Dustin played at the Gap store in Janesville.

Like most artists in this day and age, Dustin relies heavily on social media to promote his music. You can find more information about Dustin Lee on his website (http://www.dustinlee.net). Dustin is also available on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/dustin_lee), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/dustinleemusic), and MySpace (http:www.myspace.com/officialdustinleemusic). You can also find more of his music available on SonicBids (http://www.sonicbids.com/dustin_lee).

Artist Profile - J Rilla

Name: J RillA
Genre: Hip-Hop/R&B
Hometown: Flint, MI
Current City: Sheboygan, WI

Joe Ryan III (J Rilla) is a hip-hop and R&B artist who currently resides in Sheboygan. He was born and raised in Flint, Michigan and eventually moved to the suburbs of Detroit. As a child, he says he was a "mellow, polite kid," who taught himself to play the organ and piano by ear at his father's church.

When J wasn't at the church, he was playing basketball. He eventually became an All-State / All-American player, and even landed a partial scholarship at Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio.

J met a woman from Sheboygan, whom he eventually married. The couple became the proud parents of twin boys. However, the marriage ended and his ex-wife moved from Michigan to Sheboygan. J sold everything he owned - including his studio equipment - and moved to Sheboygan to be closer to his boys.

Over the next few months, J was homeless. He spent a lot of time listening to the radio and writing songs in his car. When he heard about the Kiss Icon contest on 103.7 WXSS in Milwaukee, J decided that it would be his chance to make a name for himself. He was able to record and produce, "No Longer Mine," one of the songs that he wrote in his car. He submitted it to WXSS via a Sheboygan library computer just two days prior to the deadline.

There was something unique about "No Longer Mine," as all of the tracks and vocals were created and performed by J, himself. The song sounds like a mashup of L.L. Cool J and T-Pain.

The song was a hit, and it survived the initial screening process, as well as the head-to-head combat stages of the contest. For the final stage of the contest, J had to pull out all of the stops to become the Kiss Icon. Since he was from out of state and did not have many friends or family in Sheboygan, J Rilla turned to social media and old-fashioned marketing tactics to promote his song. He promoted himself heavily on MySpace (http://myspace.com/iamjrilla) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/iamjrilla), and he placed "Vote for J Rilla" fliers on the windshields of cars throughout Sheboygan.

A great song, along with relentless social and grassroots marketing, gave J Rilla the push he needed to become the 2009 Kiss Icon.

After his Icon success, things kept moving up for J. He was asked to perform a Fourth of July set at Milwaukee's Summerfest, and he played to a sold-out audience at Sheboygan's Weill Center.

Now J Rilla is teaching recording and production skills to at-risk teens in Sheboygan. He says that he wants to provide the teens with a positive message and, "show them how I used music as an outlet when I was at the lowest point in my life." J's music will also be featured on the soundtrack for an upcoming movie called, "Eight Year Theory."

You can buy J Rilla's tracks at LaLa.com, Amazon.com, and his music is coming soon to iTunes. He plans to continue pushing his music to radio stations throughout the state and to keep working his way up the ladder.
